professional development
I wanted to take a moment and let you know about a great opportunity for teachers of English Language Arts. OCTELA (The Ohio Council of Teachers of English Language Arts) will be hosting its annual conference on March 27th and 28th in Columbus. The conference’s theme is “Building Bridges: Connecting Ideas and Methods” and has something for every ELA educator and district. Attending this conference will be a great investment—as you will learn a wealth of information, enriching your role as an educator.
I know that professional development money is tight right now, but this year’s conference is going to be GREAT. I promise. I have listed a few of each day’s offerings/breakout sessions at the end of this e-mail. Please take a moment and read through them. More information can be found at http://www.octela.org/newoctela/newspconf.html

English Language Learner Tips
All English language learners are not alike but some tips will help teachers become more effective teachers for these students are listed below.
1. Build upon what the students already know-recognize their strenthgs as learners.
2. Support the students by creating a trusting environment for all students.
3. Some strategies that have been useful include: teaching root words since a knowledge of Latin and Greek prefixes, suffixes and roots can enhance a student's understanding.
4. Have students work with vocabulary by using a Word wall and allowing students to write daily about their experiences in the classroom.

Believe!
Never be limited by other people's limited imaginations. If you adopt their attitudes, then the possibility won'texist because you'll have already shut it out...You canhear other people's wisdom, but you've got to re-evaluatethe world for yourself.-Mae Jemison, the first African-Amercian woman to travel in space
