Greetings!

Happy end of the year to all teachers who survived another year with federal, state and district mandates! What has been the most challenging aspect this year for you? How often are students tested? Would you recommend teaching as a profession to young people??

Testing has been a serious business this year! Every quarter in four subject areas and state testing is too much! Kids from grades 3-8 are too stressed out!

What are some things we are doing to help the situation? I am with a group talking to some legislators next week. I will put links on the site to help us find ways to become more actively involved.

Many teachers leave after 7 years....It is a very difficult job! I don't think the general public has a clue as to the number of roles that we have to play!

As a college student studying to become a teacher, do you have any recommendations for me before I enter the "real world"...some of the blogs scare me about how different it is to actually be in a classroom!!

Julie,
I can understand that some of the blogs would scare anyone away from teaching! Every school is different and every class within a school has a unique dynamic. I am sure your experiences as a student led you into teaching so spend time reflecting upon what you liked the most as a student and build upon them as a teacher! Most states now require districts to provide a mentor to help newbies so take advantage of that help! Also stay in touch with your college instructors who might be able to provide additional guidance as you find your place! Thanks for posting~

Thanks for the encouraging post 'diamond education'! Do you have any tips about how to choose what kind of school to do student teaching at? We are able to choose and I am having a hard time trying to decide public vs. private big vs. small...suggestions?

That can be a tough decision but unfortunately in this job market you might have to adapt to what is available. There are great things about working in a small, intimate private school and many opportunities for challenge when working in a larger district. What are your thoughts/preferences?

Well, personally I like living in a big city, so definately not a rural district. Personally, I feel that I could take on the challege of a public school and am excited to do that! I just really don't know anything about private schools, so that is what makes the decision hard for me. Should I experiece what a private school is like in my student teaching and then decide?

Julie,
That sounds like a good idea! Take time to relax this summer catching up on educational books. See the link for purchasing some great books on this blog.

I am glad you found it helpful! Some great books I would recommend are: Nancy Atwell's book on Writing, Building Reading Comprehension Habits in Grades 6-12 by Jeff Zweiers and class sets of novels. Great deals!
